Stair Treads
Choosing the right wood stair treads and risers is essential for functionality and safety. As opposed to stair risers, stair treads are the horizontal part of a staircase; the one your foot makes contact with when ascending or descending. Since there’s a change of level involved, there’s also a higher risk of slipping and falling, versus when walking on level flooring. Besides protecting you, these also protect the underlying structure. So don’t worry if they become worn out and damaged, because they can be easily replaced with new ones.
At First Atlanta Flooring, you will find top-notch wood stair treads made of red or white oak, Brazilian Cherry, and maple. Matching the treads to your floors could create a greater sense of flow throughout a space, but you can also choose a different species of wood or decide to stain your treads with a complementary hue. No matter what your client prefers, it will bring more visual focus to the stairway.

FAQ
What’s the best wood for stair treads?
This is not a matter of quality, as much as a matter of choice. When it comes to oak, red oak is one of the most popular options, due to its durability and affordability. Still, white oak is way more durable, but it is also more expensive. Another detail would be that white oak doesn’t have that pink hue in it, so you should keep that in mind when making a purchase. Cherry wood stair treads have nice and lustrous red tones, with a subtle grain structure. If you’re looking for something light and clean though, maple is the answer.
Should stair treads match hardwood floors?
It’s not compulsory. You can choose your stair treads to match your hardwood flooring, but you can also go for a different stain color, that will complement the floors and give the entire setting a modern vibe.
What is the standard thickness for wood stair treads?
On average, the standard thickness is up to 1-1/16”. Note that wood stair treads must also have a minimum depth of 10” and a minimum width of 24”.
