Sanding Discs

There are several important steps to take after installing or upgrading hardwood floors. This includes cleaning, staining or painting, finishing, and sealing the hardwood floor planks, and all of these steps ensure longevity and durability.

Usually, the process of installing or refinishing hardwood floors requires sanding, which is a process that ensures that wood planks are level, and that they do not present any bumps, dents, or scratches. Sanding hardwood floors also provides a level, smooth surface that will help stains, finishes, and sealers adhere to the floor a lot better, and provide durability. Sanding hardwood floors can be done using sanding paper, sanding discs, sanding screens, sanding belts, or drum sanders. The choice of the right sanding accessory will depend on the type of project at hand and on the type of wood, as well.

Sanding discs are used for staircases, stair nosings, or for corners and other tighter areas where an edge sander can’t reach. They come in handy whenever you have to refinish older hardwood floors or smooth out newly installed floors. The First Atlanta Flooring shop offers a wide variety of sanding discs, from brands like Norton, 3M, and Porter Cable. We carry both hook & loop and stick & sand sanding discs, with grit levels ranging from 80 to 240. FAQ

What are sanding discs?

Hardwood floor sanding discs are circular and abrasive discs that are used to strip, finish, or level wood flooring. They are used to even out wood planks, removing light defects, traces of paint, corrosion, or rust from the surface of the wood.

What sanding discs do I need?

Your choice of sanding discs will depend on the nature of the job at hand, on the type of wood you’re working with, and the level of damage. If you need to strip wood planks, a grit of 40 is recommended, you need to simply sand wood, you can use a grit of 80, and if you need to finish wood floors, you can use sanding discs of 120-180 grit.

Can you sand wood too much?

Yes, it’s definitely possible to overdo the sanding of hardwood floors, and end up with an uneven, warped surface. However, sanding discs are a lot more delicate than drum sanders, so they’re recommended for beginners, DIY projects, or projects that involve working with very old or damaged wood that can’t take a lot of sanding.
